Chairman's Welcome

Chairman’s Welcome Letter

Welcome to the fantastic universe of Mechanical Engineering!

Mechanical Engineering is universally considered as the cornerstone of almost all fields of engineering science. The various disciplines of mechanical engineering are ubiquitous, not only in simple to complex applications of industry, but also in our quotidian everyday life. Therefore any engineering educational program should take into account the inherent multi-disciplinary characteristics of mechanical engineering major.

The School of Mechanical Engineering of Sharif University of Technology has undergone through several stages of evolution and progress since its establishment in late 1960s.  Today, congruent with 21st century’s requirements and in harmony with modern branches of science, such as Nanotechnology or Bio-Mechanics, and emergence of modern methods of education such as virtual or e-learning and long life self-learning skills, the mechanical engineering curricula should be programmed based on new paradigms and futuristic visions in order to prepare engineers for confronting the societal and ethical aspects of their professional life and the challenges of modern technologies.

Our academic program can be divided basically into undergraduate and graduate/post-graduate education.  We have always tried to keep a well-defined and logical balance between our endeavors towards both undergraduate and graduate programs. In undergraduate level, the program is focused in educating and training qualified engineers to commence their profession on industrial sector and service/commercial sector with high management and leadership skills. Many prominent Iranian entrepreneurs, celebrated past or present politicians, high rank government official or bureaucrats and national innovative engineers belong to our school’s Alumni. In other words, our school is an arena where the scholar elites are admitted after obtaining their high school diploma, and are prepared to be engaged in high rank positions of various social or professional activities by virtue of a competitive system of admission, high standards of education and rigorous examinations or evaluating procedures.

The graduate program leads to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in basic disciplines of mechanical engineering and various multi-disciplinary fields. We have tried to maintain a dynamic and adaptive policy in our graduate program in order to keep up with domestic industry’s research and development needs and rapid global/international technological progress.  Our faculty members and research staffs are developing cutting edge projects that include, nanotechnology, MEMS, biomechanics, bio-fluids, offshore engineering, manufacturing, energy engineering, simulation and modeling, high performance parallel computation, from both thermo-fluid and solid mechanics aspects.  The number of publications of our faculty has increased considerably in the last decade and we estimate that our participation in the production of science will continue to accelerate progressively year after year.

This website is designed for two main purposes. The first goal of it is to introduce or present our various capabilities and potentials in developing and conducting academic programs of education in Mechanical Engineering to general scholar public. The second purpose is to build a platform where Iranian or foreign based students, industry experts or independent researches could find useful links that may help them in their research endeavors and to maintain a bridge of collaboration and cooperation between scholars and industrial experts on national and international level.

Dear colleagues and students, I urge you to explore our website and to get familiar with different aspects of every day professional life of our school.  I hope you will find useful information that may help you in your career or academic research.

Navid Arjmand, Ph.D.
