Introduction:

New technologies and innovations across various sectors of the marine industry are highly dependent on advanced laboratory facilities and research centers. Undoubtedly, the development and advancement of the country’s marine industries require strong scientific institutions equipped with appropriate software and hardware infrastructure. At present, different sectors of the national marine industry have addressed this need in a fragmented manner and, in some cases, have established limited facilities. Sharif University of Technology also possesses valuable experience and significant research capabilities in this field. Naturally, through effective coordination and optimal utilization of the University’s facilities and expertise, substantial and meaningful progress can be achieved toward the development of the country’s marine industries and the advancement of this engineering discipline.

The Center of Excellence in Hydrodynamics and Dynamics of Marine Vehicles was established based on the experimental and numerical research activities of its core faculty members in the field of marine engineering. Fortunately, in recent years, these activities have gained considerable importance and have resulted in numerous valuable scientific achievements and contributions.

 


Specific Objectives of the Center of Excellence:

Scientific activities at Sharif University of Technology in the field of marine engineering date back nearly two decades and are currently ongoing across various specialized areas. Accordingly, the primary objective of the Center of Excellence in Hydrodynamics and Dynamics of Marine Vehicles is to consolidate these activities and to enhance the quality of both fundamental and applied research in marine engineering. Considering the existing capacities of the University and the national context, this objective can be outlined through the following specific goals:

  • Completing existing investments and hardware infrastructure in order to fully meet the country’s marine research needs

  • Aligning and enhancing the University’s current scientific activities in the field of marine engineering

  • Expanding international collaborations in marine engineering education and research

  • Increasing scientific output, including journal publications and books, in the fields of hydrodynamics and marine vehicle dynamics

  • Expanding and strengthening graduate programs in marine engineering, particularly in the areas of marine dynamics and marine vehicles

Enhancing university–industry collaboration and conducting applied research projects in the fields of hydrodynamics and dynamics of marine vehicles

Major Achievements of the Center of Excellence:

The mentioned activities, carried out with the aim of advancing marine research, have resulted in numerous significant achievements. The most important of these include:

  • Completion of the Marine Engineering Laboratory and its transformation into a unique facility at the national level

  • Development of a comprehensive hydrodynamics simulation software for marine vessels for the first time in the country

  • Design and construction of advanced equipment such as wave generators, robotic fish, and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)

  • Organization of intelligent marine vehicle competitions

  • Contribution to the organization of offshore industry conferences
