Department's Head Message

The Department of Mechanical Engineering, since the establishment of the Sharif University of Technology in 1965, has consistently pursued a noble mission through sustained effort to be among the leading and most distinguished engineering departments and scientific centers in the country across its three principal objectives: education, research, and technology. In order to achieve its fundamental objectives, the department has, by benefiting from highly qualified and distinguished academic staff, establishing appropriate educational and research infrastructures, expanding research facilities and specialized laboratories, and attracting talented students at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels, attained a prominent academic and research standing at both national and regional levels after years of dedication and perseverance.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering takes pride in having, over more than half a century, educated and graduated numerous competent engineers and specialists, accomplished researchers and faculty members, as well as leading figures in technology and entrepreneurship both nationally and internationally. As such, it is recognized as one of the most successful and exemplary institutions in nurturing influential and distinguished members of the academic community.

At present, the Department of Mechanical Engineering, as a leading academic center, keeps pace with the rapid advancement of knowledge worldwide and offers education across a wide spectrum of specialized and interdisciplinary fields in mechanical engineering. These include applied design, energy conversion, manufacturing processes, biomechanics, marine engineering, and mechatronics, at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels. To this end, the department, through its well-equipped educational and specialized research laboratories, as well as its three active national centers of excellence (the Center of Excellence in Energy Conversion, the Center of Excellence in Design, Robotics and Automation, and the Center of Excellence in Hydrodynamics and Dynamics of Marine Vehicles), has played a significant role in advancing the frontiers of knowledge and promoting the practical application of various branches of mechanical engineering and related interdisciplinary sciences.

In alignment with the objectives and priorities of the national system of science, technology, and innovation, and with the aim of implementing the macro-strategies and national initiatives outlined in the Comprehensive Scientific Map of the Country, this Faculty has established its principal policies around several key pillars. These include directing education, research, and innovation toward enhancing the effective role of engineering disciplines in addressing priority industrial and economic challenges, meeting the country’s real needs and contextual requirements, achieving scientific authority with due consideration to regional planning, advancing innovation at the frontiers of knowledge, and educating and empowering entrepreneurial, self-reliant, creative, and innovative human capital capable of producing science and technology. Accordingly, the department’s main strategic goals have been defined within the framework of these core objectives.

In pursuit of these objectives, and in order to meet institutional needs as well as to develop and modernize administrative, educational, and research infrastructures, the new building of the Department of Mechanical Engineering was inaugurated in 2020 through the dedicated efforts and valuable contributions of the respected former deans. The facility is now fully operational and serves as a dynamic academic environment for the Faculty’s esteemed academic staff, researchers, and students.

It is hoped that through the collective commitment, cooperation, and support of our distinguished faculty members, valued staff, dear students, and all members of the proud and honorable Mechanical Engineering community, we will continue to preserve and enhance the Faculty’s esteemed position. Furthermore, we aspire to play a meaningful role in opening new horizons for scientific, industrial, and technological advancement in the country and in rendering sincere service to our beloved nation.
